Frederick County History
In 1748, the area was created from parts of Prince George’s County and Baltimore County. In 1776, the county was divided into three parts. The northern portion remained Frederick County while the other two became Washington County and Montgomery County. The county occupies over 90 locations and sites that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, indicating the rich and historical background of the county. Many of these sites are farms, parks and historic districts, with some popular examples being Frederick Historic District, Harris Farm, and Catoctin Mountain Park.
Shopping and Dining in Frederick County
Many of the popular shopping and dining destinations are located within Frederick, the county seat of Frederick County, and other nearby neighborhoods like Clover Hill, Ballenger Creek and Linganore-Bartonsville. In this historic district, you can find shopping locations like Frederick Towne Mall, Frederick Crossing, and the Francis Scott Key Mall. Named after the man who wrote the lyrics to the country’s national anthem, this mall contains over 100 stores and restaurants. Firestone’s Culinary Tavern is located on North Market Street and is a bustling, up market tavern offering New American fare, plus gourmet food in an adjacent retail shop. Dutch’s Daughter is another fabulous spot in downtown Frederick. This upscale American choice offers a genteel dining room and a casual downstairs bar applicably named The Dungeon.
Museums, State Parks & Other Attractions
Attractions in the Frederick area include South Mountain battlefield and the Schifferstadt Architectural Museum. The oldest standing house in the county, this architectural museum provides tours, exhibits, and displays illustrating why the area is known to be the finest existing example of German colonial architecture in the United States.
Baker Park, Gambrill State Park, and the Sugarloaf Mountain Natural Area are just some of the many wonderful parks located in the county. Frederick’s proximity to the Potomac River allows for plenty of water sport activities like fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. Catoctin Mountain Park is a well-known reserve for hikers while also offering camping, fly-fishing, and cross-country skiing. Camp David is enclosed within the park and is a rustic retreat famed for its use by vacationing U.S. presidents. Other fabulous parks include Cunningham Falls State Park, Greenbrier State Park, and Gathland State Park. The county also provides a zoo, plenty of golf courses and community parks.

Getting Around Frederick County
TransIT provides public transit and commuter service throughout Frederick County, Maryland. There are several MARC train stations spattered around the county, with some popular ones being in downtown Frederick and Brunswick. MTA commuter bus, Metrobus and Metrorail are just some of the other alternatives for public transportation. I-70 and I-270 are the only interstates in the county and provide direct access to Hagerstown, Baltimore, and DC. Other commonly used roads include Route 17, 340, 40, 144 and 15 which links residents with Pennsylvania and beyond.
